How Does Greenhouses Work

Don’t Forget Your Greenhouse Equipment!

If you’re looking to add a greenhouse to your backyard or side yard, you definitely want to remember that you’re going to need some specialized greenhouse equipment to make your structure a success.  It’s a common mistake to think that a greenhouse kit comes with absolutely everything you need to start growing your plants and flowers in this structure, and unfortunately some have failed to figure their needed greenhouse equipment into their budget and are left with a structure they can’t use.

Common greenhouse equipment that you might need would include a shade cloth for those overly hot summer days.  While your greenhouse works because it traps sunlight inside and keeps the heat from escaping, too much direct sunlight during the summer can make your greenhouse feel like a sauna!  Plants can easily wither under this type of oppressive heat.  Shade cloths are sold wherever you find greenhouse equipment and are usually preferred over other types of materials and drop cloths you could use because they stand up to the elements.  Many also have loop fasteners and stakes so that you can secure them to the ground the way you would a tent, or they come with clips to keep them steady against the greenhouse.

Another piece of greenhouse equipment you’ll probably need is just the opposite of that shade cloth – a heater for those cold winter nights.  While sunny winter days can keep your greenhouse warm during the day, at night it does get very cold in that frame.  You can buy a heater where you buy greenhouse equipment or you can use a sturdy space heater.

Many hook up their heaters to a timer so that it goes on at a particular time of the night and goes off in the morning without having to go out to your greenhouse every morning and night.  Timers and electrical outlets are also common greenhouse equipment you’ll need for these things.  An electrical outlet stand typically looks like a generator and usually hooks up to an outlet in your garage or home.  Timers are very affordable and easy to install and program.

Of course you’ll need some shelves and even benches for your greenhouse, depending on its size.  You can use what you have at home to hold your plants but usually purchasing the proper greenhouse equipment will mean that your benches and shelves are made of a pressure treated or coated wood that will withstand all that direct sunlight and that won’t rot because of water spills when you water your plants.  Miscellaneous types of greenhouse equipment you’ll need include a thermostat and a hydrometer to watch the temperature and humidity of your greenhouse.  You may also need levers for your vents so that you can reach them easily.

Make a list of all the greenhouse equipment you’ll need and shop around before you purchase your actual greenhouse.  You don’t want to spend all your money on the structure and not have anything left over!
